It must have been the book 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil', or all the Hollywood movies, I feel the need to discover more of North America, the heart land. I have no baggage, I have no hang ups. I was born and raised in Italy. I am capable to accepting people of all personalities, as long as they are good people. I believe that in the world the majority of people are of a good nature, and those are the people I want to meet on this trip.
I love to make connections, whether we are soaking in the campground jacuzzi, or waiting in a museum line, or having a beer in a bar. I love a good story.

Day 83 - Elko Nevada to Lincoln California: Final Day!

It's the home stretch. We are coming home California. But first we have to go through Donner pass in the middle of a snow storm.
The snow is not sticking to the ground and we are going to make it out before it does.

We have gone through so many places and so many more we didn't have time to see.
We learned so much. Every state is different. We always found kind people at every corner. We will never forget all the beautiful people we met along the way: Luis, Horacio and Freddy, Rich and Ruth, Naomi, Zoe, Tracy, Matt, Albert, Gary and Kathie, Julian and Anne, Les and Jane, Heather and her girlfriends, Ricardo, Dean, Otis...
We understand that our experience was limited by the fact that we were tourists, and sometimes it really worked out in our favor. We want to be tourists at home. We might rediscover places and people that were right under our noses and we hadn't noticed before.

A couple of mental notes:

  1. We will not make plans for afterwards when we start a trip like this. We want to be more flexible with our time.
  2. We will stay in each place at least a week and get a deal on the weekly plan.
  3. We will do site seeing only every other day.
  4. We will travel on Sunday.
  5. We will stay in State Parks as much as possible. They are the best for the best price.
  6. We made a detailed list of the things that are left in the trailer and the things we need to bring.

Desert creature!

We love the Iron Horse RV resort. The place is well maintained, each site has a cement pad, and the bathrooms are very clean. There is a swimming pool and Jacuzzi, lounge with comfy armchairs and TV, billiard and air hockey. Besides all this, we could use the facilities at the Hilton hotel near the campground. We used the exercise room, but they also had a indoor pool with Jacuzzi and a nice restaurant.

Day 79 - Nashville to Kansas City

Today we are starting our long way home. There will be miles to cover as we will be driving like maniacs with few short fuel stops + munchies

Walmart Supercenter, 8551 N Boardwalk Ave, Kansas City, MO 64154.
We asked the manager and we got approved. We parked by the Burger King. We could latch on to the Burger King WiFi and it worked beautifully.

In the entire trip, we saw only 4 flags and this is one... we never saw one on home front yards, only on poles like that owned by some companies. It's looking good America!

Going through Saint Louis Missouri and over the Missouri river. We'll be back some day.

Day 78 - Nashville: the Parthenon, Capitol Hill, River Front, Fisk Jubilee Concert with India Arie

Nashville has a Parthenon like the one in Athens, full scale in Centennial Park. It's quiet a sight. I have never been in Athens, so I feel this building gave me a chance to see it. Inside it holds a re-creation of the 42-foot statue Athena and it also functions as an art museum.

Ready for the concert at Ryman Auditorium
The concert at the Ryman Auditorium was a real treat and I am so glad we decided to attend it.
The first part was a performance by the Fisk Jubilee singers. This group sings Negro spiritual songs originally sang by slaves. Their voices and the lyrics are very moving. Here is a performance on TV.
The singers are all students with full scholarships from the Frisk University.
The Fisk University was built in 1866 to provide college education to students of color. After few years, the university was financially in dire straights. In 1871, George White, a music professor and treasurer, decided to take a group of students on a tour in order to get money to save the university.
The singers were so successful that they became well known throughout the world and were invited to perform in Europe and other countries.
I didn't film their performance but this link has 'Ain't got time to die', one of the songs they sang.

In the second part, India Arie sang together with the Frisk Jubilee singers. I sneaked a short video.
